The BBC has announced a new version of its website, www.bbc.co.uk, available on mobile devices.
According to the company the new offering contains an intuitive interface which it hopes will present users with easier navigation. Included in the new service is a new mini-site for BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat, a news service aimed at Radio 1's listeners.
The launch of the new mobile service will be supported by a month-long marketing campaign aimed at football fans throughout the UK. Advertisements inside and outside football grounds will aim to encourage people to text a number in return for a link to the BBC's football website. Football fans inside grounds on match days will be also able to use the Bluetooth facility on their mobile devices to receive the link. From March 17, an advertising trial will begin on BBC television.
According to figures released by Nielsen Mobile, provider of consumer research for the mobile industry, bbc.co.uk is the top mobile site in the UK, attracting 2.7 million unique visitors a month, an increase of 1 million year-on-year.
Matthew Postgate, BBC Controller of Mobile said: "The refresh of our mobile browser service comes at a critical moment in the development of mobile in the UK. It is the first step to transforming bbc.co.uk on mobile into a much richer and more engaging experience. In the coming months, our mobile proposition will develop significantly, and include coverage of the summer's biggest sport events including Euro 2008, the Beijing Olympics and Wimbledon." |
