Firms should use 'short' domain names
DomainsSME's should choose short domain names that reflect the product they sell, a start-up advisory body has said today. SME's have been advised against using domain names that feature the name of their company, unless it is a reflection of the product they are selling. Data collected by VeriSign found that registration for new domain names had reached 10.7 million during the first quarter of 2007, illustrating the continuing strong growth within the industry.

Managing director John De Groot said: 'The use of keyword searches to discover what words people are searching on with search engines, Google etcetera, can provide guides to what the best domain name should be if it is not the business name.'

Travel website Cruise.co.uk has announced it paid £560,000 for the domain name Cruises.co.uk, setting a new British record and possibly being the single biggest sum of money ever paid out to purchase a single letter. The world's most expensive domain names are currently sex.com, porn.com and business.com.
