Worries over economy affecting recruitment
There has been a dip in the rate at which British firms are recruiting new staff, research has shown.

According to a survey carried out by Manpower, the recruitment company, the balance of employers aiming to take on new workers during the next three months has dropped by nearly 50 per cent compared to the first quarter of 2007.

This puts the rate of recruitment at its slowest for six years.

The slowdown was blamed on the recent credit crisis and pessimism about the economy.

Worst hit, said Manpower, is the finance and business services sector where recruitment plans for the first quarter of next year have fallen by 12 per cent from the final three months of 2007.

Mark Cahill, managing director of Manpower UK, said of the findings: “People are a bit concerned with what they are seeing from the financial market and the outlook for the economy. Most people are still looking to employ more people. It’s just not as high or as optimistic as it has been.”
