Smaller organisations more likely to celebrate Christmas
Two out of three employers will be laying on a Christmas party for their staff this year, a new study has found.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s Annual Reward Management survey, the full results of which will be published next February, 69 per cent of organisations will be getting into the festive spirit this Christmas by holding a party for their employees.

In the case of smaller firms, however, that proportion rises to 80 per cent, with 17 per cent rewarding staff with a seasonal gift such as hampers and vouchers. By contrast only 50 per cent of very large companies employing will hold a party this year, with 15 per cent giving a gift.

The survey revealed that private sector employers tend to be the most generous. Some 84 per cent will be organising a Christmas bash for staff.

Charles Cotton, the CIPD’s reward and employment conditions adviser, commented on the findings: “It is encouraging to see that the spirit of Christmas is still popular with most organisations. Christmas parties and gifts provide smaller organisations with the opportunity to boost team morale and thank staff for all their hard work during the year. A little can go a long way in creating a better atmosphere within the workplace.”

Mr Cotton added: “Parties and gifts also provide a useful barometer as to how well an organisation and the economy is doing. It will be interesting to see what happens next year, when we will see the full affects of the credit crisis in the city, especially the impact on the financial and professional service firms. The scrooge mentality could come into force as companies cut their Christmas parties.”
