Online Christmas shopping takes 15 pence of every pound

A surge in online shopping in the pre-Christmas period saw internet retailing account for 15 per cent of consumer spending.

In the three months from October to December, shoppers splashed out £15.2 billion making online purchases, 54 per cent more than in the corresponding period in the previous year.

According to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, the Christmas boost took the total e-retail spend for 2007 to £46.6 billion.

Internet purchasing reached its highest point during the first week of December, when it registered a 9 per cent year-on-year rise.

The peak occurred later than in previous years suggesting that consumers were happy to delay their purchases in order to benefit from pre-Christmas discounting.

Retailers that performed particularly well were those that had both an online and a High Street presence.

Anthoula Madden, of business consultancy Capgemini, said: “Online retailing is developing so quickly that those who do not yet have an online presence really will get left behind.”

Anthoula Madden added: “There can be no doubt online is growing its share at the expense of bricks and mortar retailers and we believe this trend will continue.”

James Roper, the chief executive of IMRG, commented: “Consumers are making the most of the 24/7 convenience and competitive pricing that online shopping has to offer. Consumer behaviour has changed dramatically over the past few years.”
