Entrepreneurial growth 'brings global benefits'
EarthEntrepreneurs around the world should unite to pressure governments into generating new opportunities for international trade and investment, new research suggests.

The ninth annual Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) claimed that promoting new business start-ups is key to driving economic growth. Up to 40% of early-stage entrepreneurs, it found, expect at least 25% of their customers to come from outside their own country.

Commenting on the survey, which analysed 42 nations, Kent Jones, Babson College professor and member of the GEM team in the US, said: "The world economy needs entrepreneurs and increasingly, entrepreneurs depend on an open and expanding world economy for new opportunities and growth through trade, foreign investment, and finance.

"GEM research confirms that new entrepreneurial opportunities in all countries will expand if trade, entrepreneurship and economic growth are fostered, especially in the developing world."

The report also discovered that entrepreneurship is higher in low-income countries where other options for making money do not often exist.

As a nation's per capita income rises the start-up growth decreases due to improved economic and employment conditions but then picks up again in the world's richest countries where enterprise is seized upon by entrepreneurs looking for new opportunities.

In addition, GEM revealed among the factors associated with the number of new businesses being established in a particular country are whether entrepreneurship is widely believed to be a good career choice, and the degree to which it is reported in the media.
