My lecture has been built around how the use of project life cycle standards and the 10 commandments of project management can result in the successful management of IT infrastructure projects.

Both of these are mechanisms that can be used to reduce risk and increase the chances of success. There is, however, another area which I want to touch on before closing. This relates to the role of the professional body for the IT community.

There are currently numerous institutions purporting to be the professional body
representing IT professionals. The British Computer Society has around 40,000
members; this is estimated to be about 5% of the eligible UK information technology professionals and makes this society possible the largest body representing the profession. The Society has always striven to introduce effective levels of professional standards into an industry sector which has more than its fair share of charlatans and snake oil salesmen.

A Member or Fellow of the British Computer Society will have been through a rigorous membership process; consequently such an individual will have a successful track record in the Information Technology sector. The chances of success in the I.T. project arena will be enhanced if the I.T. professionals involved belong to the British Computer Society, irrespective of which business sector their experience has been gained in.
In summary, my thesis is that successful management of IT infrastructure projects can be achieved through a pragmatic attention to the project life cycle, a common sense approach to risk management and the employment of suitably qualified I.T.
professionals.

There is no black magic involved!
