Future

With the integration of web services into other traditional media such as television other issues are raised. Digital television now offers the capability to buy goods online and send and receive emails. These new systems may not use cookies but have the capability to track our viewing habits and online purchases. The digital broadcast flag is a specific technology that will do just that.

"New copy-protection technologies put the right to watch anonymously at great risk," says Seth Schoen, staff technologist for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital-rights advocacy group.

The Platform for Privacy Preferences does go some way to addressing the issues with cookies, but as technology and the means of accessing the Internet is changing so rapidly it is difficult for regulatory bodies to keep pace with the developments.

Conclusion

It is a simple fact that if you are on a network of any kind then you can be observed and recorded. There is money to be made by selling this information to advertisers and other organisations that may benefit from it. We expect to be monitored on the University network but it is easy to forget that your ISP is part of a network and ultimately that is what the Internet is. The best we can do is to educate others and ourselves about the issues of privacy. I feel there is little we can do to protect ourselves from being observed and recorded. Large corporations and multi national companies will stay one step ahead of the legal letter of the law. They have the resources to look to the future and amend the technolgy used to still fulfil their aims. If we are aware of this then we can act accordingly. When George Orwell wrote 1984 he created the concept of Big Brother. We do not have thought screens but we do have our Internet use and soon our TV viewing habits monitored.
