Open source may be a concept that is new to you. I will give an overview of what it is and how it can help your business. I do not want to go into great detail, in brief open source software can be installed and used for free. It can be run on a variety of platforms and operating systems (including windows). A good overview of the terms of use can be found HERE
Firefox (the web browser) has shown that open source software can be taken mainstream, and if you need an email client try Thunderbird. It has a range of plug ins with an excellent calendar. Over the past few years open source software has steadily gained acceptance in mainstream computing. In the small business world where costs can be a real issue, I suggest you try some of this software. You may never buy software again. Here is are some interesting facts about open source software: Over 64% of the worlds web servers are run on open source software. In fact this web site is run on open source software. This site runs e-commerce, blogs email facilities and all the programs and code needed to run it can be obtained for free. Open source software is very secure How can this be the case if everyone knows how it works? Well, it is the peer review process it goes through in the open source community means it is very well tested. Problems if they occur are rapidly fixed. If we move away from the Internet and look at what can be run on the desktop there are a host of applications that run on windows that can be downloaded and used by you today. For example did you know there is a full office suite that can be used for free? It has word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software and a range of other goodies. It won't cost you a penny and will open and run all your Microsoft files. In fact it will save all its files in MS formats as well. It is called open office and more details can be found in the useful links section of this site. Click here for details I urge you to take a look at this software, it is industrial standard and offers a range of features that are very innovative. Google have also been giving away software for some time now. Picasa is a good image manipulation program and I have put a link to the google pack (google free stuff) as well as a program called the GIMP (graphic image manipulation program). It has a range of advanced features. Next week - If software is free why do I have to pay for anything?
