We all know being is business is tough and if you are a small business owner I suggest even tougher.
Looking back over the years I cannot recount the amount of meetings I have been in when employees from large organisations quote telephone numbers for budgets for this or that. These budgets often reaching beyond an annual salary are just the introduction to a channel that money will flow down with ever increasing speed. What a luxury for those in the world of corporate business. Yes, they do need to produce results and are judged by their output, but I do not see them going to the bank manager cap in hand to fund their project personally. In my world and probably yours the buck stops here, this time every time. Don't get me wrong I will spend money to develop my business or ideas but when I control the purse strings I want to see a chance of a realistic outcome.
The other side of the coin is that there are never any guarantees in the small business world and by nature I take chances. I'm in business because I want to develop my ideas, maybe to provide a product and service in a way that I see others are not doing, or I may want to innovate and shake things up. Above all I want the freedom to do it as I see it could and should be done in my business. When I cannot do it or economies of scale dictate I work with others, I find working with partners a fantastic way of widening my portfolio. I have an excellent relationship with my partners. We or should I say I cannot be all things to all people and thus partners fill the gap and provide a service that is needed and that I cannot provide.
If you have read my biography on the expert panel section then you will know I have a background in IT. This enables me to tie my businesses together. The Internet allows me to tie my partnerships, ideas and projects into a manageable unit. This is very cost effective and allows me to do things that were unheard of 20 years ago. This goes beyond just selling, I have e-commerce sites where I sell things on line but if I have a message from all the seemingly endless work I have done on my PhD it is this. Move beyond email, use your web site as more than a place to put your address and telephone number. Collaborate on line and all those projects that used to be more than an annual salary to set up are now easily within your reach. You definitely don't need a PhD to do it, you just need to be open and willing to new ideas. We can innovate and develop within a tight budget, in fact we have always done it. Using the Internet it is now a great deal easier.
